Transparency for public on Translink fare rise

Translink metrologo
Many consumers were disappointed to hear about Translink's increased bus and rail fares, which took effect this week. As the Alliance Party's spokesperson for Regional Development, I have invited Translink representatives, DRD officials and the Consumer Council to meet with the Assembly Transport Committee about the rising prices.

The Alliance Party is committed to affordable, accessible public transport, and we think that both public and private sectors should be doing more to encourage people to use sustainable transportation. We would like to have an open discussion with Translink about their recent changes, especially in light of the drop in petrol and utilities prices during the past few months.

Translink needs to be forthright with the public, especially concerning fare prices. That's why I requested their presence at the Regional Development Committee, along with DRD official and the Consumer Council, who have also called for increased transparency.

Of course, all of our departments and agencies need to make difficult decisions in response to financial pressures. We are fortunate to have some of the lowest transport fares in these islands, but organisations are still accountable for explaining these changes to the public.
