Lyttle highlights importance of Northern Ireland arts funding

On 28 April in the Assembly, Lyttle lobbied Minister of Culture Arts and Leisure Carál Ní Chuilín for secure arts and creative industries funding in Northern Ireland. The question followed Lyttle's request for an assessment of the EastSide Arts Festival, which Ms Ní Chuilín lauded as a "brilliant exposition."

Lyttle's first submitted question asked the Minister to assess the contribution of the EastSide Arts Festival to the growth of the arts and the social and economic regeneration in East Belfast. He also queried whether her department has been able to invest in the festival.

Ms Ní Chuilín affirmed that indeed, her department had contributed to EastSide Arts in conjunction with Arts Council, adding that the festival does "excellent work" in East Belfast.

Lyttle went on to cite the major public support for maintaining the 2014-15 level of public funding for the arts; he asked the Minister how she proposes to secure that level of funding. Ms Ní Chuilín stressed the importance of widespread recognition of the role that arts, culture and the creative industries play in different communities.

"When the overarching strategy is brought to the Executive, I hope that all parties will give it support," she said.
