Lyttle advocates for better animal protection

Lyttle, an outspoken supporter of animal rights, asked the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development what progress has been made on animal cruelty legislation. He also condemned recent reports of animal mistreatment in East Belfast, requesting that the Minister advise the public on how to take action against such crimes.

Lyttle’s submitted question in the Assembly on 24 February asked Minister O’Neill for updates regarding animal legislation. The Minister responded that she first will be discussing an interim report with officials, then will report back to members in the Assembly.

Lyttle also cited the case of the “brutal cat poisoning” in the Dundonald area of East Belfast, asking if the Minister would offer suggestions to the public about tackling animal cruelty.

Ms O’Neill replied that the public should visit the DARD website to find out how to report cases of animal cruelty, and can also contact DARD offices for additional support.

Lyttle has previously lobbied to ban the hunting of wild animals with dogs. However, as the hunting issue involves ministers from multiple departments, the Executive must introduce that legislation.

The MLA plans on continuing his efforts in fighting against unnecessary animal cruelty and introducing legislation that will curb illegal activities.
