Lyttle appointed Vice Chair of Assembly Group on Animal Welfare

A newly formed Assembly Group on Animal Welfare held its first meeting on 3 March. Speaking as vice chair, Lyttle said that the group hopes to end animal cruelty in Northern Ireland.

The first meeting involved a presentation from the USPCA, an organisation which has worked to prevent animal cruelty for over 170 years. Representatives mentioned responsible pet ownership, better awareness on how to report animal cruelty and robust law enforcement as essential components of improving animal welfare.

"We will be holding meetings with officials from the Department of Agriculture and Justice to update the group on how they are meeting their animal welfare obligations," Lyttle said. "A joint report from their Departments is being completed into the implementation of the 2011 Welfare of Animals legislation."

Lyttle added that the group's future plans include more collaboration with other animal welfare organisations.

"I know how important this issue is to many people across Northern Ireland," he said. "I am delighted to contribute to this important work and hope that our efforts will improve our society for all living things."
