Lyttle encourages all to participate in Walk to School Week

I am delighted to support the Transport Minister's Walk to School Week 2015 initiative and would encourage all drivers, cyclists and other road users in East Belfast to take extra care next week. Walk to the School Week will run from 18-22 May across Northern Ireland.

There will likely be an increased amount of schoolchildren on the roads during this time, as the initiative aims to convince pupils of the health, social and environmental benefits of walking to and from school. It is well known that those pupils who walk to school in the mornings arrive more alert and ready to learn than those who travel by car.

In addition to giving pupils beneficial exercise and a sense of independence, walking also decreases traffic, pollution and other harmful by-products of vehicular transport. I am excited about this initiative and hope that it leads to more students supporting themselves and the environment.

To promote the initiative and overall walking in schools, Travelwise NI, the DRD sustainable Transport Unite, is running a 'My Walk to School Week' competition. Three schools in each county will win high-vis vests for each pupil to improve safety and visibility while walking.

The competition asks pupils to use words and images to describe their journey to school in the run up to and during Walk to School Week.
