Lyttle presses Education Minister about oversubscribed nursery schools

Following on his question regarding how many East Belfast nursery schools were oversubscribed for 2015-16, on 12 May Lyttle asked Education Minister John O'Dowd how he intends to improve early education provision.

Lyttle informed the Minister of the problematic application process and lack of spaces in East Belfast's nursery schools, citing oversubscription for 2015-16.

"After Round 1, I received a number of calls from parents seeking help —right across East Belfast, from the Newtownards Road to Dundonald — because their children had not been offered a place," Lyttle said.

"What work is [the Minister] doing to improve application guidance and provide additional accessible nursery places in East Belfast?"

Mr O'Dowd responded that he has increased the amount of extra students a school could take from three to four, and that he has also brought in extra community and volunteer places. He added:

"You will continue to be lobbied, and rightly so, by parents whose children have no received places, but we are only at Stage 1, and the process has not been completed.

"As I said, 99.9% of parents who stuck with the system last year had their child placed."
