East Belfast

The talent and character of local people have made East Belfast a political, economic and cultural engine room for Northern Ireland and at times, the world.

At one point in time East Belfast lead the world in the five main industries of Shipbuilding, rope works, tobacco works, linen and aerospace. Our rich heritage of ingenuity is symobilsed by the iconic Harland and Wolff cranes, Samson and Goliath, and shipyard at which Titanic was built. Literary, musical and sporting sons such as Clive Staples Lewis, Van Morrison and George Best inspire us that local people can make a world class contribution in any walk of life.

East Belfast continues to rise to global competition and play a central role in building a peaceful, prosperous and innovative Northern Ireland.

The devolved power-sharing regional government and legislature, the Northern Ireland Assembly is based at Parliament Buildings, Stormont, designed by Sir Arthur Thornley. Whilst the pace of progress delivered by this institution has at times frustrated, many people would agree the potential for partnership and local accountability provided by the Assembly is the best way to build a shared and better future for the region.

International businesses such as Bombardier Shorts Aerospace continue to employ thousands of local skilled workers and are collaborating with our universities to establish world-class centres of research and development in composite engineering technologies.
Whilst the small and medium sized businesses that are at the centre of our community continue to face unprecedented economic circumstances, and need the support of both government and local people, many continue to find ways to survive and indeed thrive in the face of this challenge.

We can also be encouraged by plans for physical development in this constituency and I am giving my full support to flagship schemes such as the Connswater Community Greenway, a multi-million pound linear park and civic square project that will reconnect and regenerate much of East Belfast.

I am currently supporting work to ensure the heritage trails, walkways and cycle routes of this, and the Comber Greenway, connect with another flagship project, Titanic Quarter, to provide local people and visitors from all over the world access to all that East Belfast has to offer.

A shared and better Future

This positive development must be made accessible to all and seen as a unique opportunity to address inequality and division in our community. Local representatives must listen to and work in partnership with local people to improve educational attainment, health, economic activity, community safety, provision for the most vulnerable and the physical environment across East Belfast.

My vision is for an inclusive, skilled and environmentally aware East Belfast. We must work together to make this a world-class constituency in which to do business, visit and live. I am committed to playing my part and look forward to working with you to make this vision a reality.
